So here we are. Shanghai Queer Film Festival, the city’s first independent LGBTQIA+ film season has arrived, a celebration of queer culture and lives in China and Asia, an exciting new platform for film and filmmakers. The weeklong festival opens on September 16th.
WE ARE HERE, we are queer. We are lesbian, we are gay. We are bisexual and we are pansexual. We are trans, fluid, and non-binary. To be queer means to fall outside of the boundaries, to be apart from the assumed binary. We are queer, and we are as real as you.
WE ARE HERE to reflect on our community. It is a time to stand together, to share our stories and to let new and diverse voices speak and be heard. Asia is at a crossroads for queer people. In some countries, they are moving towards better legal recognition and marriage equality. In others, basic human rights are being denied, or have taken a step backward.
WE ARE HERE to explore the potential, to embrace our possibilities and memories. Cinema is our record of the past, of dreams and desires and of a way to imagine the future. We find our queer selves on the screen.
